FAQs

We've tried to assemble some general answers to the most commonly asked questions we hear from our clients. While this information should provide you with a basic understanding of our business we encourage you to contact us directly so that we can speak to your specific situation.

We recommend that you reach out to us as early as possible for a number of reasons. As we are a boutique bakery we only accept a limited number of cake orders for any given weekend. We have had clients with such large and complex designs that we only take a single order for the entire weekend.

Additionally some design elements such as sugar flowers and our figurines can take up to a week to create and then set before they are ready for placement on your cake. We like to ask our customers for at least two weeks notice just in case. Of course we will always do our best to accommodate last minute requests.

Remember, we don't charge for consultations so if you think you'd like us to make your cake just give us a call and we can talk about how we can help.

The inspiration for our designs is strongly influenced through interaction with our customers which is why we always prefer meeting in person, or on the phone, as opposed to just over email. Some of the most talked about details in our designs came from an off-hand comment made while talking about the event, or the guest of honor. We like to learn about our clients interests, family members, favorite colors, hobbies, or little quirks that make them who they are. It's these tidbits of information that make our cakes not just customized, but personalized. We will often ask for photos of the guest of honor to help make our figurines more closely resemble them, or of a favorite item to help us recreate it more faithfully. The more input from you, the better output from us.
In a word, Yes! Our fee for tastings is $25.00 for 4 cake flavors and filling combinations. We ask that you bring a maximum of four people to your tasting. This will allow us to have the most productive session possible. If you select us as your cake provider will apply the $25.00 tasting fee towards your final balance. As we use the same recipes for many of our cupcakes, you can walk in anytime and have a mini tasting to take home with you.
Unfortunately we are not able to ship our cakes. The only way to ensure safe arrival of a cake is to book its own seat on an airplane. We are however able to ship some of our figurines and cake toppers. Please contact us for more information about what items can be safely shipped.
We work closely with each client to provide the perfect balance of servings and design to fit within their budget. That's why we quote each client's project based or their individual needs. As a very general rule our rolled fondant cakes range from $6 to $14 per serving depending on the complexity of the design and the choice of fillings. Our buttercream cakes range from $3 to $5 per serving, again based on the types of fillings and number of layers. We encourage you to contact us to get a personalized quote....you might be surprised how accommodating we can be.
Our specialty cakes are designed for each customer specifically. If you look through our gallery you'll never see the same cake twice. Every element of every cake is crafted by hand in our studio. Unlike other bakeries we don't purchase premade sugar flowers or use mass manufactured plastic items on our cakes, therefore our labor costs are higher. Additionally all of our cakes and fillings are made from scratch. As you can imagine it's much more time consuming to hand craft a chocolate mousse than to tear the top off of a plastic bucket of pre-made filling. When you purchase a cake from Baked Impressions you can rest assured that it is a hand crafted, one-of-a-kind work of art made just for you. After we make a cake, we always break the mold.
Each of our cakes is made to satisfy the indiviual requirements of each of our clients. It wouldn't be appropriate for us to share how much a client paid for a particular cake. We are happy to use an image of a cake in our gallery as inspiration, but the final price of your cake will be based on your final design.
In general a $50 deposit is required to reserve the date and is applied to the total balance of the cake. 50% of the total cost is due upon signing of the cake contract. The remaining balance is due 14 days prior to the event or delivery date. Please feel free to contact if you have any questions regarding our payment or cancellation policies.
Our standard delivery fee is $50 for any location within the metro Detroit area. Additional delivery fees may apply for locations significantly further or if the route to the destination is particularly hazardous.
The simple answer is Yes, everything is edible. With that said it's important to note that many of our sugar flowers, figurines, and other design elements are assembled using internal structures such as toothpicks, wire-frames, and floral wires which of course are not edible. We do not use plastic figures, silk flowers, or other inedible materials to decorate our cakes. We provide each client with detailed information about how their cake was assembled to ensure nothing is eaten that shouldn't be.
Our hand sculpted and painted figures are meant to represent the person whom is their inspiration. We focus on attributes such as hair color and style, eye color, general face and body shape, etc. We like to say they are more of a caricature than a sculpture.
While we possess the ability to duplicate another designers work we prefer to use your photographs as inspiration in creating a new design that's uniquely yours. We know how much time, effort, and emotion it takes to create a truly spectacular cake and hope that other designers respect that work as much as we do by not duplicating their work.
While we prefer to make edible cakes, we are able to create dummy tiers or complete cakes. As most of the cost associated with our cakes is the decorative work, the cost of dummy cakes/tiers is not significantly less than that of an edible cake.
We are always interested in meeting talented bakers, decorators, and artists. If you are interested in working/interning for us, please use the Contact Us form and we will contact you to discuss any opportunities currently available.
